I had a bad day today.

Well, this happened today…

I inspect houses for a living. Some of these houses are vacant properties. I have never really had any trouble besides nosey neighbors. I’ve had the cops called on me once but that worked itself out really quickly. I still have a guard up when I go into houses but I know the signs that somebody has been there after doing this for two years. Today was different.

I had a house today in Union City that I’ve been doing for the last six months. I’ve never been inside. One reason is because it’s in a run down area of the city, not dangerous per say, but just crummy. The other reason is because there is just nowhere to park on this street. I usually end up parking on the sidewalk for a few minutes. I just say that the door is open even though it never is, and I take a few exterior photos and move on. I got the job today and when I showed up there was a notice on the door. I get out, o over to the door, and read that there is a new securing company that is maintaining the property. They boarded the open windows on the top floor. They changed the deadbolt and lockbox. Since I had actually gotten a parking spot this time, I decided to give it a go and do the interior inspection.

I opened the door and immediately was met with a horrible odor. It’s common. The best way to describe it is as a mixture of mold, garbage, and decaying wood and plaster. There was a lot of debris on the floor and when I tried going into the room next to me the door was black by all the ceiling tiles that had fallen off. I decided to report the bottom of the house as unpassable. The house, being a duplex, had stairs right next to the front door leading to the top unit. I walked upstairs and as I crested the last stair noticed two bedrooms and a bathroom behind me and the kitchen in front of me. There was also a lot of debris in the kitchen. I stepped on a fluorescent light .bulb and decided I couldn’t go any further. I decided that I should just photo the two bedrooms and bathroom and be on my way.

I turned the corner to the first bedroom. There, on the floor, was a mattress. The mattress had two people on it. My eyes went from the woman’s feet to her head at the exact moment her head popped off her sweatshirt pillow. I yelled. She yelled. We both scared the absolute shit out of each other. She didn’t hear me come through the door due to either being very asleep or probably because she was on drugs. My guard was down the whole time throughout the inspection due to the smell and the overall condition of the house. I just didn’t feel like somebody could possible be in there. There was though. A couple (I presume) had somehow gotten into the house and were using it as a crash pad for whatever they were doing. The woman was around 35 and was some sort of Spanish. The guy was black.

With a loss of breath I told them that this was a vacant house. The woman was immediately apologetic. I was trying to catch my breath as she kept telling me that she was sorry and to please not call the cops. The guy she was with was awake but didn’t seem like he gave a shit as to what was going on. I think they were doing heroin. His face reminded me of my brothers. I told her that I wasn’t police and that I wasn’t going to call them. I told her that I was inspecting the house for the mortgage company. I asked her how she got in. She told me the front door was open. I told her it was locked when I got here and she said they locked it behind them. She begged me not to call anybody. I said I wouldn’t. I looked around and she caught me looking and told me that she isn’t doing so well right now. It was after that sentence that she began to cry. Her face started to break and she began to sob. I told her it was okay, for her not to be worried and that I wasn’t going to report it. I told her to find another place because this house is being maintained and looked after but that they had time to find one. I said sorry one more time and then I left. The last thing I saw was her face as I turned around. She was utterly defeated and alone. I was almost running to the car before I realized what I walked into.

Until then, the life that she had somehow found herself in was only seen by her and the people she chose to let in. The people her saw her like that were in the same boat. They were homeless, broke, and most likely addicted to drugs. She didn’t want to be in that house. She didn’t want anybody who had their shit together to see her at a moment long past losing her shit. I walked right into the lowest point in her life. She was embarrassed. She was sad. She was alone.

I don’t mean to ruin any good mood that any of you are having. It was a really heavy and visceral experience for me, one that I don’t want to have happen again. It made me think of my brother. It made me think that him being in jail the last couple months may have prevented him being in the same spot as that woman. I’ll never forget her face. Not for a long, long time.

I lost the fight with the future. I’m all yours Twitter.

Okay guys, I decided to get a Twitter account.

@booththoughts

I’ll be posting links to my reviews and ramblings but I could use some followers I guess. Those of you who have social media, which is a first for me, follow me so I don’t feel like a failure and sink deeper into my depression. Thanks guys!

Highlighting the work of David Michôd

I recently ordered “Animal Kingdom” on Blu Ray and realized how much I loved the film. Below is the trailer…

Australian cinema has released some of the most electrifying films over the last couple of years and “Animal Kingdom” may be the cream of the crop. It’s a family crime story unlike any other, directed by a man who holds nothing back. Dave Michôd, who only has one feature film under his belt, is steadily rising up my ladder of favorite modern day directors. That’s how much I love this film. It’s unflinching and unapologetic, highlighted by incredible performances by Jackie Weaver (Who nabbed her first Oscar nom for the role) and Ben Mendelsohn (who fucking should have nabbed his first Oscar nom for the role). Both actors were phenomenal and added to the overall tension of the film which is full throttle as it is. The film deserves a full review from me which I’m willing to do when it comes in the mail and I give it a 3rd viewing. For now though, check out Michôd’s short film “Crossbow” below…

Strange. Did you watch it? Cause I’m going to talk briefly about it.

Once again, Michôd takes what seems like a run of the mill story line into a unique experience. We think that all the awkward parent sex and the drug use in the house is going to lead the kid to murdering his family but what we get at the end of this film is the exact opposite. He doesn’t want yo live in that shit hole anymore, and at 14 he can’t wait four more years until he’s legally allowed to leave. He did the only thing he could think of and ended his life by having the cops shoot him. The bleakness of Australian cinema is in full force as the female cop who pulled the trigger is left with questions for the rest of her life. And that last piece of narration from our narrator. Creepy shit.

David Michôd has a new film coming out. The trailer is below…

I provided the teaser trailer, which I find to be mesmerizing. There is a full trailer out there but I haven’t seen it and I don’t want to. I’m afraid it’s going to ruin things for me. This looks like it just may be the best thing that I’ll see all year. Yes, I know how silly that sounds but the trailer is that good. Guy Pierce looks like he’s been through some serious shit and Robert Pattinson looks even worse. Hopefully this is the film that shows that the kid can actually act because he showed promise in “Cosmopolis”. The film releases June 20th and I can’t fucking wait.

It’s worth noting that David Michôd also wrote yet did not direct the film “Hesher” which surprised the hell out of me for being both hilarious and powerful. He’s a talent coming out of an entire region of talented film makers. I know I’ve got some friends on WP that are from down under. What do you guys think of Michôd? Is he your countries version of Paul Thomas Anderson? Do you think his work is crap? What have you?

Film Review : Still Life (2006)

IMDB Score – 7.3

Directed By – Zhangke Jia
Starring – Tao Zhao, Zhou Lan, Sanming Han, Lizhen Ma, and Hongwei Wang

Citizens return to a flooded town to salvage what they can and say good-bye to things they lost.

It’s funny how my Netflix queues tend to come together at weird points. Two films directed by Zhangke Jia managed to find their way into future viewing by me and I didn’t even plan the damn thing. “Still Life” came in the mail yesterday and I have “A Touch of Sin” lined up for my next viewing in my Instant Queue. I’ve never seen any of his films before and did not plan this is the slightest. Weird.

Anyway, obviously I sat down to watch Still Life” first, as the mail service is longer and more expensive. Gotta get those discs out of here quick so that my monthly bill is worth it. The film ended up being a pretty interesting watch, albeit very slow, which is not a negative. The film centers around two people who never meet during the duration of the film, as they try to seek out their spouses whom they haven’t seen for years. The story told in the film is a loose one. Neither story arch comes into full focus and only briefly concludes by the end of the film. However, this is a unique film. Zhangke Jia managed to tell and show a lot more than what was most likely written down in the script. The film takes place in the area near the Three Gorges Dam that is to be demolished before eventually being flooded by the dam. Some parts have already been flooded and the rest is being taken care of as the Dam project begins to progress. We are literally seeing people having to move out of areas where they spent the majority of their lives, and they can’t take everything. They have to choose. What is important? What is to stay behind. It is this theme where the emotion comes from in the form of our two protagonists quests to find their spouses. When they find them, will they try to salvage what is left? Will they let them go to nature? Powerful stuff.

The film is gorgeous by the way. In an almost Michael Haneke style, Zhangke Jia let the camera sit a lot and just take in the silence and body language of what was being shown. There were many shots of characters standing before a lush and open landscape that was both beautiful and frightening due to its humongous scale. Images of boats traveling through huge gorges painted most of the scenes and still camera shots of town inhabitants smoking who knows what as they take a break from their labor fill in the cracks. I love this kind of film making. By leaving the camera still on a subject, and letting the scene play out, I get a more realistic feel and can enter the world easier. It also lets the powerful moments register with more weight when you’re not having a rising maelstrom of lights and music to scream to the viewer that what they are witnessing is important. Don’t pander to me film. Let me do the work occasionally.

“Still Life” is a very unique but ultimately rewarding film with subtle imagery galore and packed with symbolism. It may not be a re watchable film, but the photography and heavy message of letting go gave me a unique experience and a good reintroduction to Chinese cinema. I’ll be watching Zhangke Jia’s most recent film “A Touch of Sin” next.

4/5

Guys, I have arrived!

Look at that thing! The Vern over at Video Vortex nominated me for the liebster award which I can only assume was an accident because I am a modest writer. Thanks buddy. There are apparently some serious rules that go along with this and I also need to nominate eleven blogs with under 200 followers. Networking at its finest. I feel like I’m Santa. Here are the rules…

The bloggers who have been nominated must link back to the person who nominated them.

Nominees must answer the eleven questions given to them by the person who nominated them.

Those nominated must choose eleven of their favorite bloggers who have less than 200 followers to answer their own set of questions

When you are nominated, you cannot nominate the person who nominated you.

Okay! So first what I’m going to do is nominate my people. These eleven blogs are the ones I find the most interesting to read on a daily basis or whenever these bastards find the time to write. If you didn’t make the list then try harder because I’m a difficult person to please and my opinion means more than the opinion of others. I also take bribes.

By the way. I’m breaking a rule. Some of these have a little over 200 followers. I needed to add them to get to 11 and I also do what I damn well please.

Now I’m going to answer Vern’s questions. If you were nominated by me, your questions to answer are at the bottom.

Vern’s Questions

1. What angers you the most when watching a movie in theaters

It’s going to be cliche but my ears pick up every single word uttered by people in a theater. It’s so damn distracting that I turn into a monster and nearly murder every one of these awful people. I just can’t imagine how these (mostly) adults can talk during a quiet film and think it’s okay.

2. What do you love about watching movies in theaters?

I have a horrible attention span. Being in a theater restricts me from getting up to make a sandwich or checking my email. I always pause a film but it always takes me hours to complete a film at home. I also love surround sound so that’s a plus.

3. Name a movie you never want to watch. Ever.

A Serbien Film. I have no interest in baby fucking.

4. Name a movie your ashamed you haven’t seen yet.

If you asked me this last year I would have answered “The Godfather” but I checked that off the list a couple months ago. I really hate the fact that I haven’t seen the majority of Kurosawa’s work or really anything by Goddard. If I were to pick one film though I think I’d have to pick Lawrence of Arabia.

5. Favorite weekend hangout.

I like keeping to myself on the weekends but I will say that in the summer I frequent my best friends cabin often. It is my home away from home.

6. Favorite band or music artist for the past week.

I’ve been into a band called Pygmy Lush for the last couple weeks. They’re folk/hardcore cause I like to be different. Check them out.

7. 3D. Yay or Nay

It’s only done right 10% of the time and even when it is it’s usually just “meh”

8. Name a movie you wish you could have been on the set while it was filming.

Easy. Jaws. I love problems and I would have had a great time trying to figure out how to make that movie work. That and I just love the ocean.

9. How do you stream movies? Computer, BlueRay Player, Game Consoles like PS4 and Wii.

I use Netflix on my X-Box 360. I never use my computer.

10. What are your top five favorite movie podcasts to listen too?

I don’t have five but religiously listen to Slash Filmcast and Filmspotting.

11. Who is your movie celebrity crush? You have to answer for both guys and girls. For me right now it’s Eva Green and Sam Rockwell.

Hmmmm. Audrey Hepburn and Michael Fassbender. I think this makes me weird.

THE QUESTIONS I HAVE FOR YOU NOMINEES ARE

1. What is your favorite movie that makes you feel like crap?
2. If You could have lunch with one person, alive or dead, who would it be?
3. What is your ideal band line up? You have to have a singer, bassist, two guitarists, and a drummer
4. Where is your home away from home?
5. What was your high school experience like? Or how is it going so far?
6. Are you an optimist or a pessimist?
7. What is your rainy day film?
8. Which film have you seen the most in your entire life?
9. What is your ideal job?
10. Are you afraid of the future like I am?
11. Do you read? What is your favorite book?

This was fun. Thanks to Vern for the nomination.
